A spiritual occasion

I recently attended the licensing and installation of the Rev Andrew Stand as Vicar in the Worcester South East Team Ministry with special responsibilities for St Mark in the Cherry Orchard and St Philip & St James in Whittington (in Wychavon).

The installation was conducted by the Rt. Revd. Graham Usher, Bishop of Dudley in the presence of the Archdeacon of Worcester, the Ven. Robert Jones and many clergy from the area in a packed church at St Mark in the Cherry Orchard.

The theme of the Bishop’s sermon was “light”, starting with the creation when the phrase “let there be light” was used, continuing with the theme through to the resurrection.  He also went on to say that we should all be bearers of light, that the whole world depends on light and we should try to express that in our lives.

I was asked as Chairman of Wychavon to welcome the Rev Stand to the area of Wychavon as was the Mayor of Worcester, welcome the Rev Stand to Worcester.  The Rev Stand was presented with a new bible, now placed on the lectern, a prayer book, a flagon of water and the paten and chalice to be used at holy Communion.  These were presented by members of both congregations.

Also at the ceremony we met the Rev Richard Armitage and his wife, formerly of All Saints, Evesham, who has been a friend of the Rev Stand for over 20 years.  Richard is later this year to take retirement as a priest in Holy Orders within the police force based in Swindon.  It was good that we could reminisce regarding old times.

On Monday June 6, I took part in a visit to Evesham Community Contact Centre to meet and chat with staff accompanied by Jack Hegarty, Wychavon’s Managing Director. I then showed him two areas in my ward (Little Hampton) which is causing me some concern.  We then travelled to the Civic Centre where I had an enjoyable time visiting most of the staff, some of whom I used to work with during my time as a member of staff at Wychavon.  I found this very enjoyable and learnt quite a bit about the modern Wychavon ways of working.
